Aurora competing with the full moon

Pictures are at the bottom...

The new year has brought winter back. Finally! Today at work we had a beautiful full moon rise through the sunset in the north, (hah! doesn't make any sense does it?) and not much cloud. Just lovely. This evening, just as I was about to head to bed, I stepped out onto the balcony to see if, just by chance, there were any aurora out.

And there was! Patchy, but bright and clear, competing with the fullmoon. I got properly dressed, and headed off around town to a few different places. Ute's mother missed out by a day, after 12 days here hoping, they came out again as soon as she left.

On a side note, I'm happier with so many more of these photos than my usual excursions. Actually in focus, with the stars sharp pinpricks, not blurs. Finall getting better at this. (A shiny lens for myself for christmas and enough light from a full moon to make focussing less of an effort probably helps too)
